Indonesian Police To Launch Special Operations In Papua
JAKARTA, July 16 (Bernama) -- The National Police plan to launch special operations in Papua following recent security disturbances in the region, including in the PT Freeport area, Indonesian news agency, Antara, reported.
The deputy head of public relations division of the National Police Headquarters, Inspector General Sulistyo, said here on Wednesday the operations would be part of the police's efforts to anticipate more security disruptions.
He said he could not yet explain the operations plan in detail as it was now still being discussed at the National Police Headquarters.
"They are called special because they will be carried out by special forces with certain targets, for certain period of time and with a special budget," he said.
Besides enforcing the law the police in the operations would also reach out to local community leaders to maintain the local public's sense of security.
Two police officers were wounded after unknown gunmen fired at the car they were riding in near Mile 54 in Tembagapura, Mimika, early on Wednesday.
Chief brigadier Jimny Renhard was hit in his leg and First Brigadier Abraham Ngamelubun in his buttock and thigh in the incident. They are now being treated at local Kuala Kencana hospital in Timika.
Two employees of PT Freeport, namely Australian Drew Nicholas Grant and Indonesian Markus Rante, were killed by unknown gunmen on Saturday and Sunday.
A police officer was also killed and two others were wounded in the incidents.
Several security incidents have been recorded to occur in Timika recently including the torching of a fuel depot in Biak, attacks on police and military posts in Puncak Jaya, the torching of the Cendrawasih University library, an attack on the Abepura police station, the discovery of a bomb in Muara Tami, Jayapura, the torching of a local election office in Tolikara, an attack on a taxi-bike driver, and the occupation of an airstrip in Memberamo.
